Fara Ling

Fara graduated summa cum laude in May 2023 from Hope College in Holland, MI, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and Minor in Exercise Science. At Hope, she worked with faculty such as Matthew Farmer, Sharon Wong, Heather Cornell, Julie Powell, Nicole Flinn-Culver, Jasmine Mejia, Kara Brems, Lindsey Hanson, and guest faculty/choreographer Tracy Dunbar. She has also had the opportunity to be in process with  choreographers such as Zoe Scofield (zoe|juniper), Jennine Willett (Third Rail Projects), and Nick Pupillo (Visceral Dance Chicago). Born and raised in Malaysia, she completed her Royal Academy of Dance Advanced 2 vocational graded examination in 2018 under the instruction of Lee Yupin and Goh Siew Hiong.

As an aspiring choreographer, she created ensemble, duet, and solo work regularly for the departmental Student Dance Showcase. She enjoyed collaborating with musicians in the process. Her site-specific dance film From This Place was shown at the 2021 Detroit Dance City Festival College Showcase. The score for From This Place was composed and produced in collaboration with Michael J. Pineda.

Fara worked on the performing arts technical staff under Erik Alberg, Eric Van Tassell, and Kenneth Chamberlain. She has also worked as a costume shop stitcher under Darlene Veenstra. She was a production intern for Hope Summer Repertory Theatre’s 49th (outdoor) season, operating the light board and assisting in set construction, wardrobing, load-ins, and strikes.

Besides dance, Fara played the violin for eight years, completing her Trinity College of Music London Grade 8 examination in 2016. Also a writer, her poem “Best of Everything” won a 2022 Academy of American Poets University and Colleges Prize. Her writing has appeared in international literary magazines such as Asian SignatureThe Claremont Review, Literally Stories, and Anak Sastra, as well as Hope College’s literary magazine Opus. During high school, she founded and ran a literary magazine for teenagers called Lit Allsorts.

Fara’s experience encompasses concert dance to dance for film and site-specific works. As a former violinist, she seeks to collaborate with musicians in the choreographic process.
